Carol’s Kindness is growing beyond a pantry

The pantry at Gus Garcia is the culmination of my week, working with a team of around 45 volunteers to bless the people in the area with as healthy of food as we can secure. Now a couple of wonderful volunteers are helping with packaging food too.

It is a bit trying, moving back to the smaller room Saturday and using the U-Haul truck to move two days’ worth of food at once, but we did it! Of course, our truck showed up at the same time as the one from the Central Texas Food Bank. Lots of boxes moving everywhere! Coolers and trays and bags of meals, too.

We were short on the prepared sides from CookUnity due to a problem they had early in the week, and short on meat due to one of our freezers going out causing us to have to dispose four coolers full of meat. Glad to have caught it in time! We had just enough with the extra deliveries during the pantry to serve everyone in line.

  • The team from People’s Food Program was back to pack bags to deliver to those in our area that are unable to get out to the pantry. They packed and delivered 19 bags, 10 to seniors.
  • Food Not Bombs who gets produce and some staples from us to create meals to deliver to the unhoused on the streets made and delivered 160 meals Saturday.
  • Our partnership with Austin Mutual Aid, where they cook and deliver meals on Sundays generally serves around 200.
  • We have been able to give food to We Can Now to do their meal in the park on the east side on Sunday.
  • And we packed boxes to send to a local apartment complex that has recently housed individuals with little to no income yet.

OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE PANTRY AND WHY WE CAN DO WHAT WE DO TO FEED THE HUNGRY!!
