It was the day of the raspberry!

The driver from the Central Texas Food bank came up the walk with the biggest pallet of raspberries that I’ve ever seen in my life. Each stack on the pallet was about 6 feet tall and the little trays are only about 4 inches tall, each containing six beautifully packed containers of raspberries. In all it was 100s of boxes.

We got other produce that was just phenomenal – beautiful bananas, peaches and apples, all kinds of beautiful lettuce and prepackaged salads, and all of it went home with our clients. We also got so many many sweets this week. We had pies, donuts, cakes, cupcakes, croissants. We were a little light on bread, but we had trays of tortillas which are always a real hit at our Pantry.

I have to make mention of the absolutely fantastic volunteers that turn this disorganized thing when we start at 10 AM with into a well oiled machine to hand out the food by noon every Saturday. Too, the people who are at tables all afternoon to keep the food ready to select. Sometime we have to hunt for just the item they are hoping for. It definitely takes a bunch of us — 30 to 40 dedicated wonderful people. And of course, thanks to Gus Garcia rec center for allowing us to use the space every week to serve, their community. They are to be commended!

On Sunday, I will take the remaining raspberries to a couple of the free fridges to share with the rest of the community. We love sharing so that nothing goes to waste.

OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF THE PANTRY AND WHY WE CAN DO WHAT WE DO TO FEED THE HUNGRY!!
