What an amazing day! We had never done a mobile pantry at Gus Garcia Rec Center, so I worked with the Central Texas Food Bank and the site management to schedule this event. We have been seeing 170-180 or so households per week, so we thought requesting for 250 would be about right. The need for food is SO great in Austin right now that 378 were in line and registered. They sent some extra food, but we ran out of food just before 11 AM with about 50 registered in line and at least another 50 in the drive and lined up on Rundberg.
The food that was distributed did not disappoint! It was beautiful. We had bread products, eggs, yogurt, milk, white rice, chicken legs, PB, cantaloupe, potatoes, squash, cucumbers, pineapples, bell peppers, cabbage, eggplant, carrots, and sweet potatoes. The CTFB brought 14,365 pounds of food and gave every bit of it out to those in the community.
We are grateful to all the volunteers who came out to help in this effort and to the staff from the food bank who worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Congratulations to Carol’s Kindness Plus, Gus Garcia Recreation Center, and Capital Area Food Bank for a successful mobile pantry on Saturday August 29th. Carol’s Kindness has been able to serve over 1000 households in August, plus our outreach. It is certainly a work of the heart.
