First of all, Derek is a real people-person, and he is always trying to help others. He is organized, kind, humble, cheerful (sounds like a boy scout) and “spiritual.” He is the one who soothes the waters and sees the best in everyone, the one who finds out the little details about people’s needs so we can meet them. He says he enjoys bringing joy to people and he does it every minute he is with us.
He says he came for the food more than a year ago on the recommendation of one of our other superstars. It did not take long before he was lending a hand and slipped into the position calling people to enter the pantry to “shop.” But he does so much more. He welcomes them and explains how the pantry works. It didn’t take long before he was coming early to help get the food into the building and staying late to take coolers and totes back to storage, and taking food to neighbors in need.
Derek has had many careers in his life: butcher, apartment manager, and landscaper. He spends his time reading the bible and fishing. He is good at it too, as you can see in the photo. Now that he is retired, he is devoting his time to taking care of his wife and volunteering with Carol’s Kindness. We are so grateful to have him with us. Say thanks for being here when you see him.
