Carol’s Army Behind the scenes with the pantry

Summary

description of volunteers front of the line at pantry Superstars

Every week and sometimes several times a week they get into their cars with crates and tubs and drive to the donor stores and warehouses to pack up the food and drive it to Carol’s. Rain or shine, hot or cold they go. Some days it is only a little bit, some days a car/truck full. Carol has often made a promise of being able to pick up a surprise donation in a very short time and these people stop what they are doing and go.

When they arrive at Carol’s, they sort the items by category for Miranda to weigh and put into its proper location: freezer, refrigerator or dry goods shelving. We have dollies, carts, furniture moving dollies, crates, boxes and human ingenuity. Over the last year or so we have accumulated commercial and residential freezers and fridges to hold our food until our Saturday pantry and a collection of wheeled shelving 5-6′ tall to hold the dry goods.

We have revised our methods and lost and gained volunteers over the last few years. We (Jerry and Robert) wangle most of the maintenance, upkeep, and repairs saving us a fortune. Summer and holidays bring a few changes as do groups who want to volunteer together, generally not on pickup but some have. Some search out new donations for us too.

Some of our volunteers help Carol and Dianne re-portion large packages of food each week to be able to share with more clients. Two more pitch in every week to help clean out and sanitize the fridges and freezers.
These are the unsung heros you never see making everything possible.
