Carol Rabun Nominated for RecognizeGood

Carol Rabun wins $5000 from RecognizeGood with over 20,000 votes to support pantry operations. This celebrates her 8th year of operation in an economically depressed area of east Austin. Initially she was seeking greens for her baby pot bellied pig but received so much she shared the excess with her neighbors. When she told the grocery store this they gave her more food to share. A program was born and exploded during COVID.

Her quest to save food from the landfill resulted in donations several days a week and some massive weekly donations. Soon 50-60 people lined up each time cars were in the drive to get food for their families and neighbors.

By summer of 2023 Carols Kindness had outgrown her home driveway. Carol negotiated an agreement to locate the pantry on Saturdays at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center a few blocks away. The number of people continued to increase surging to 260 individuals during the week between Christmas and New Year. Most pantries closed but not Carol.

This award helped fund a new website and a storage facility for the food salvaged in addition to supplementary food for the pantry.
